ior me aamage, wmcn ne was also ordered to make good, in default of payment fourteen days' imprisonment. <$ A Sbkiks of Chabgis.<— William Cresswell, alias Gleeaon, was charged with drunkenness, with having damaged ConBtable Sinclair's jumpers to the extent oC £2 10b, with having assaulted Constable Kowell while in the execution of hit duty, and with having assaulted William Kirk in the Christchurch lock-up. Mr Weston appeared for the accused, who pleaded not guilty to all the charges, except that of drunkenness. The evidence showed that the aocused, after having been searohed on Saturday night in the lock-up, made an attempt to get back hie money, which was lying on the desk. Constable Eowell interposed to prevent him, and ro eived two severe kicks. Constable Kowell waa aasiated by Constable Sinclair, who in the struggle that ensued had his jumper torn. The accused was then put in the Bame cell with Kirk, but the latter, when called," said he did not wish to press the charge of assault. j The accused waa fined 10 j and costs for | druokenneae, ia default forty-eight hours* | imprisonment; fined 5* for damaging Coni Btable Sinclair's uniform, and aUo ordered ! to pay for the d&inige, ia default of p&y- --'. ment fourteen days' imprisonment, and sentenced to two months' imprisonment with hard labour for the assault on Constable Rotrell. Mr Wot ton said if he waa I not out of order, he would appeal to the [ Bench to reconsider its decision with regard to tho assault. Mr | Donnelly appeared for the accused. Inspector Broham stated that he had received from the gaol-aurgeon v certificate j that ' the female accused waß unable to j appear. He was, therefore, obliged to apply for a remand. The accused were I remanded for a week.
