Lord Rosebery, Sir W. V. Harcourb and Mr Arnold Morley, Premier, Chancellor and Postmasterj General respectively, will receive a deputation from the Chambers of Commerce on Friday next supporting the resolution passed at the Canadian Conference, for a subsidy for Pacific steamers and the construction of a Pacific cable. THE HOST J. G. WARD. The Hon J. G. Ward has addressed the Colonial Party in the House of Commons on New Zealand politics. Sir John Gorst presided. THEATRICAL. Mr George Edwards has engaged Pattie Browne, a well-known Australian actress, to play Lottie Venn's part in Tlte Artist's Model. THE NIGER. Captain Lugard has returned from West Africa. In the course of an interview he vouched for the truth of the statement that the Governor of Dahomey led a French, expedition up the Niger River, and declares that two large forces are assembled at the Lower river. LONDON BANK OF AUSTRALIA. The balance-sheet of the London Chartered Bank of Australia shows old fixed deposits £4,347,000, current accounts and new deposits £1,304,000, cash items £1,442,000 ; investments, bills, loans and other assets in London, .£782,000; bills discounted, loans and other assets in the' colonies, £5,508,000. AN APPEAL CASE. The Privy Council dismissed the New Zealand appeal case Johnston v. Oldham, with costs. i GOLDMINING COMPANY. Blagrove's Freehold Goldmining Company, Coromandel, is announced, with a capital of £62,000. THE WILDE CASE. Wilde will be put on trial again on May 20. A TREATY. I Captain Lugard concluded a treaty with the chiefs of Borgu on the Niger without paying attention to French claims. THE CUBAN INSURRECTION. NEW YORK, Mat 10. It is .reported here that three thousand rebel Cuban cavalry were routed by the Spaniards, with & loss of seven hundred. The latter lost three hundred. THE FRENCH IN AFRICA. PARIS, Mat 10. The French press reports that the Governor of Dahomey has completed the formal occupation of Hinterland up to the Niger. MUSICAL. Paris, mat io.
