Countess Russell sued Earl Russell for the restoration of conjugal rights, stating that she was willing to recant the odious charges against him in her unsuccessful divorce suit. THE LIBERATOR COMPANIES. Five directors of the Liberator Companies have been committed for trial on charges of fraud and conspiracy. Heavy bail was imposed. MONETARY CONFERENCE. Mr Buxton, in reply to a question, said that it was unnecessary to consider the- question of the representation of the colonies at the monetary conference until it wns convened. ENGLAND AND ITALY. The Daily Chronicle says that England has refused to advance towards Dongpla, and has thus put an end to the project of joining Italy in converging on the Nile Valley in the autumn. SIR R. HAMILTON. At the Bank of Australasia meeting, Mr Gibbs instanced as hopeful features of the position of the colonies, the increased production, the rise in wool and silver, the great output of gold, improved revenue returns, public and private economy, and the absence of a commercial crisis. SOUTH AUSTRALIAN GOVERNORSHIP. ' It is officially announced that Sir James Fergusson was offered the Governorship of South Australia, but declined the appointment. It is reported that the position has been offered to Sir E. Grey, Under-Secre-tary afc the Foreign Office. Mr R. C. Munro Ferguson, M.P. for Leith, and not Sir James Forgusson, declined the South Australian Governorship. CAPE COLONY. Mr Cecil Rhodes denies the state* ment that he is intriguing against Sir Henry Loch, and declares that when he left London for Capetown he was unaware of the intention of the Government to appoint Sir Hercules Robinson as Governor of the colony. MICHAEL DAVITT. ' Mr Michael Davitt sails for the colonies in the Orotava. He hopes to refrain from politics while in Australasia. THE LEAMINGTON SEAT. The Conservative Party in the Leamington constituency refuses to support the Speaker's son, George, in the forthcoming election for the seat. Dr Hale, first Bishop of Perth, Western Australia, and latterly Bishop of Brisbane, is dead. DYING. Sir Robert Hamilton is dying. A MINING SENSATION. The directors of the Londonderry mine, Coolgardie, are in receipt of cablegrams stating that the rich shoots of ore in the mine are exhausted. The news has caused a sensation in the mining market.
