Rifle Shooting.
DISTRICT MEDAL COMPETITION. The competition for the silver medal awarded by the Government to the best shot among the volunteers of the district; took place at the Bromley range yesterday afternoon, under the supervision of Lieu-tenant-Colonel Gordon, who was assisted by Sergeant-Majors Barrett and Purvis. The competition is confined to efficient volunteers who have gained marksmen's badges in connection with the class-firing for the year. Thirty-two men have gained these badges in the North Canterbury district, and twelve of these competed yesterday, seven of them being from the Kaiapoi Rifles, two from the Bangiora Bines, and one each from the City Guards, College Rifles and A Company. The last-named corps furnished the win* ner. in Private Jackson, who made 87 out of a possible 120. It is a coincidence that lasb year also the A Company sent one representative, who won the medal. The Bhooting yesterday was, on the whole, good. The light was favourable, bub a strong baffling wind, blew across the range. The conditions were ten shots, standing, at 200 yds, ten kneeling at SOOyds, and ten lying down at 500 yds. The following are the scores in order of merit : — Private Jackson, A Company, 200 yds 30, 300yda 25, 500 yds 32, total 87; Private Condon, Kaiapoi Bines, 31, 28, 23 — 82; Private Bobilliard, Kaiapoi Bifles, 31, 30, 20—81; Private Ashton, City Guards, 34, 24, 18— 76; Private Burbery, Kaiapoi Rifles, 26, 26, 21—73; Sergeant Day, Kampoi Rifles, 28, 23, 21—72; Private Fantham, Kaiapoi Rifles, 28, 22, 21 — 71 j Private Hayman, Kaiapoi Rifles, 19, 26, 25—70; Corporal Jones, Bangiora Rifles, 24, 22, 18—64; Private Fraser, Kaiapoi Bines, 23, 21, 18—62; Corporal Hartland, .College Rifles, 22, 19, 17—58; Sergeant d'Auvergne, Bangiora Rifles, 28, 12,8—48. The third competition for Captain Elillar*s prize was fired at the Kainpoi Rifleo' range on Saturday afternoon, noon. The shooting was hardly up to the standard of the previous competitions, rhe following are the results :— Private H. Hayman (handicap 2 points), total 53 j Private G.
