« ; £PKOM OUR SPECIAL CORBEBPONDBNT.] ! WELLINGTON, August 27. NATIVE LIGIStiATION. A meeting of Native chiefs at present in Wellington was held to-day to consider the Native If gislation now before Parliament. Tehue Hue Tukino presided, and the me&ting was addressed by Major Kemp and Kipa Whatarui. No definite resolutions were passed, but the general opinion was expressed that in legislating on Native affairs Parliament had not taken sufficient notice of the wishes of the Natives themselves. It was thought that ] Parliament should give Heke'a Native I Rights Bill fair consideration. Wi Pere's Native Land Administration Bill met with general approval, and as it was the first attempt on the part of the JTatives to settle the land difficulty, it was thought ; that Parliament should take it into favourable consideration. Farther meetings are to* be held to consider the Native legislation proposed by the Government. Eeke has no expectation of his Bill being passed, but he wishes the .House to express its candid opinion upon it, if only that Maoris may realise how hopeless it is to look for the concession asked in it. WAIMAKARIRI WATER SUPPLY. The Waimakariri Water Supply Board Loan Bill had a speedy and uninterrupted passage through the House. Its consideration in Committee this-evening occupied exactly two minutes, and when Mr Buddo retired from bis place at the table there was some applause over what is about the shortest Committee passage on record. The Bill was reported to the House without amendments, and the third reading was agreed to without-debate. It haß now to run the gauntlet of the Upper House. SIFLK SHOOTING. The parliamentary rifle representatives had a practice to-day at the Polhill Gully range. The highest score was made by Mr M'Nab, with Messrs G. J. Smith and Buddo second and third. Mr M'Nab fired from his own rifle, but the others ÜBed the " conI demnod " rifles imported f or the Government by a Wellington firm.
