CHRISTCHUBCH. Thttesdat, August 16. (Before Messrs A. Ayers and W. I. Ballinger, J.P'e.) Drunkenness.— For this offence Elizabath Goodfellow web convicted and discharged with a caution. Alleged Breach of the Patents Act. — W. E. Hanlon was charged with committing a breach of the Patents, Designs and Trades Marks Act, 1889. SergeantMajor Mason said the accused was only arrested on Wednesday night, on a telegram from Dtmedin that a warrant Had been issued for hie arrest. He was leaving Lyttelton by the Kaikoura when arrested. He (Sergeant-Major Mason) asked for a remand to Dunedin, where the case could be heard. Mr Donnelly, who appeared for accused, said | hiß client was well connected in Danedin. The charge against him aeemed to be a trumpery one of selling what purported to be Seigel's pills. As he did not wish to go back to Danedin in custody, he (Mr Donnelly) would apply for bail. SergeantMajor Mason offered no objection to bail being allowed providing it were substantial. The Bench remanded accused to Dunedin, and allowed bail, accused in £50 and two sureties of £25 each. Alleged Labcskt of a Purse.— Albert | Payne was charged with having, on August 13, stolen from Coker'a Hotel a puree containing £20, tbe property of James White. Mr Donnelly appeared for accu:ed. On the application of Sergeant-Major Mason accused was remanded till Thursday next. Alleged Larckny of a Bicycle. — William Williams waß charged With having, on August 13, stolen a bicycle, value £14, the property of Richard Kent. Mr Donnelly appeared for accused. Eiobard Kent, a bicycle manufacturer, carrying on business in Christchurch, deposed that on Monday last a man came into his shop and hired a bicycle for an hour. He did not return with the bicycle, and witness found that it had been Bold for £7 10a. The bicycle produced was the one witness lent to the man. William James Cudden deposed that the accused sold him the bicycle produced for £7 10a, in Bowman's Auction Booms on Wednesday afternoon. Accused said the bicycle was his property, and that he brought it from Danedin. Detective Besjamin deposed that he arrested accused in a boarding house at 8.30 p.m. on "Wednesday. In answer to the charge, accused said he was hard up, and was tempted to sell the bicycle. He reserved his defence, and wbb committed to take his trial at the criminal sessions of the Supreme Court on Monday nest. Bail was allowed himself in £50, and one surety of £25. (Before Mr R. Beefcham, S.M.) Civil Cases.— Judgment was given for plaintiffs by default in the following cases : —Jameson, Anderson and Co. v.W. Bowen, claim £1 18a; same v. T. Lambert, 10?, Mr Harman for plaintiffs * A. Parsons v. F. W. Good, £4 Is 9dj same v. J. H. Thompson, £5 2s 7d, Mr Cassidy for plaintiff.— The following cases were adjourned :— North Island Land Association v. J. Hay ward, to Sept. 20; Penfold and Sons v. C. Cartwright, to August 20; Selwyn County Council v. P. Henley, to August 23.
