Art Needlework.

« At the establishment of . the Singer Sewing Machine Company in Colombo Street, there is now a charming and tastefully arranged exhibition of needlework, to j which the appellation artistic may with all fitness be applied, and which is specially I interesting from the facs that it haa been ' produced with Singer's. Household, Family ! Sewing Machine. Aa illustrating what can ba done on heavy material, there is a pair of curtains in pale green mailcloth, decorated with poppies and chestnuts. Side by side with these is a curtain of the finest I silk gauze adorned with spray b of convolvulus and humming birds. Btn- ! neretp, drapes audd'oy leys are displayed in great variety, and' there are several framed pictures, in whioh the colours of the originals have been copied with much • .■: fidelity. One picture, " A Forest Sunset," is notable from the excellence of the perspective. In another, the heads of a couple of dogs are represented in lifelike fashion. A picture of Egyptian water-girls is particularly good in colour. The head of a borgomaßter is noteworthy for the manner ■ ; in which the expression of the old feliow'a 1 face has been reproduced. A copy of a ' portion of Landseer's well-known picure, " The Last Mourner," is exceedingly effecj tive. The charming work of Japanese ' artists is recalled by a representation of a young girl standin.tr in a garden. In some : instances the resemblance to oil painting is so great that a somewhat close examination ! is r? quired to show that the work has been executed in sewing Bilk.
