The returns for the Ash button district came in very slowly, and the result was not known when the telegraph office closed. At 11 p.m. the officials were nob half-way through with the Ashburton borough ballot paperß. The following are the results of the polling at the booths at the Ashburton Library, Elgin and Lauriston : —D. Williamson 476, J. Cocker 305, G. C. Waby 294, H. M. Jones 291, G. W. Leadley 287, J. Wallace 284, W. Allan 283, M. Bruce 252, J. Sealey 240, W. M. Lyttelton 238, P. J. Honley 226, C. Eeid 225, W. Mitchell 225, M. Sfcitfc 220, J. Batty 209. The local option figures bo far are— | Publicans' licenses, present number 45, reduction 19, no license 110.
