THE BOOTMAKERS STRIKE.
A meeting of .delegates of Trade and Labour Unions, convened by the Canterbury Trades and Labour Council, was held at the Temperance Hall, Gloucester Street, laßt evening. Mr W. C. Large (president of the Council) was in the chair, and the following unions were represented : — Bailway Servants', Tailoreases and Preasers', Bootmakers', Typographical, Tailors', Amalgamated Carpenters' and Joiners', Canterbury Carpenters', Amalgamated Society of Engineers, Shearers and General Labourers', Plumbers and Gasfitters', and Boilermakers'. A letter from the Bootmakers' Union, relative to its j dispute with Messrs Maine Bros., was Ifeceived and dealt with. After gome diecussion, the following resolution wad unanimously adopted: — "That the delegates present at this meeting, on behalf of their respective unions, pledge their moral support to the Bootmakers' Union in its dispute with Messrs Maine Bros." A deputation of four members of the Conference was appointed to wait on Messrs Maine Bros, with a view of effecting an amicable settlement of the difficulty; and power was given to the deputation to confer with the Bootmakers' Union with regard to further action. After the usiial vote of thanks to the chairman the meeting terminated.
