FPee Peess Association.! AUCKLAND, Feb. 6. A rather unique action for maintenance, which had been remanded four months previouely, was heard at the Huntley Court before Captain Jackson, E.M. A man named Albert Schlinker brought up his wife, Margaret Schlinker, to endeavour to compel her to maintain him, on the ground that he was destitute and unable to earn his own living. The defendant showed that since the adjournment four months ago, plaintiff himself had been working and obtained 153 per week and his keep during the whole of that period. Tbe Magistrate held that under the Act Schlinker wa3 not a destitute person, and therefore dismissed the case. The Auckland Gas Company has declared a dividend of 9 per cent per annum for the half year. At the annual meeting of shareholders of Sharland and Co., Limited, the report stated that after writing off bad debts and depreciation of plant, and ifilOOO from patent and proprietary rights, there remained £2489 9s, from which the Directors recommended payment of a dividend of 8 per cent, absorbing .£2389, leaving a balance of .£IOO to be carried forward. The Bay of Islands Coal Company is to be wound up. The body of an infant was reported to be floating off Shelly Beach, but when the water police made a search it proved to be a large rag doll. The annual report o£ the Collector of Customs at Auckland on the revenue and trade of the port for the year ended Dec. 31, 1893, Bhows : — Customs revenue £870,117, increase £9465 ; imports £1,487,774, decrease £154,912; values of exports £1,256,470, increase £39,327. Immigration gain for 1893, 3919 souls.
