WAIMAKARIRI HARBOUR BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the above Board was held on Monday eveniogp. present — Messrs Lissaman (chairman), Hiatt, Hopkins, Mathews, Evans and Butt> and his Worship the Mayor of Kaiapoi. Correspondence was received :— From Mr Tripp, Timaru, in regard to bDundarieß. From Mr Sims and the Milling Com--1 pany, asking that a survey o£ the bar and : soundings be taken, eceing that the Kestrel and the Bock Lily had struck on the bar recently in crossing;, and that the Owake Belle was stranded on the Beach; also ' stating that the master of the Kestrel asserted that the pilot's report of the depth on the bar as being 14ft was erroneous, aa the veßeels tbat struck were not drawing that depth, j The Pilot waa requested to explain this discrepancy, and, in doing bo, said that the time he referred to was some little while B go, and tbat since then he had not I been able to examine the bar owing to the ' heavy freshes; but he intended to do sa -when the same subsided. I Reference was made by Mr Evans to thebeacons not having been placed in position I according to directions, and he pointed out the urgent necessity for enforcing the I orders of the chairman, otherwise similar accidents to that of the Owake Belle might occur. He would also like to ask the- pilot 1 whether he piloted the Kestrel and 1 the Rock Lily in, as he believed the twovessels named had just come in. The Pilot said he had signalled them to Btand ont to sea, not considering the bar quite safe at the time, but they had i ' crossed at their own risk with safety. I The Pilot's report was received, sttticg ' there was no alteration in the course of > the river, excepting in' the new channel, . -where it required deepening a little at : , the ends. He gave the tonnage for > the month as outwards 163 tonp, and inwards 146 tons. In answer to a question-. , as to the stranding of the Owake Belle, he , said the bar was smooth and the wind fauy . but suddenly changed when tb.4 vessel- was l on the bar, leaving her on tbo spit;, off! which she drifted and finally- stranded on. i the opposite side. I The pilot was ordered to secure a crew; i sound the bar particularly,, place- all the E beacons in correct positions,, and report j the soundings to the chairmso. i The finance report choired balance atr r . bank £29 3s 6d ; and accounts amounting,; I to J825 18s 7d were passed for payments j The annual balance-sheet for. the year i was passed, which showed— Receipts, £iOG I2s lOd ; expenditure, £376 ; balance, .£3O I. 2b lOd. The aseefca -were £2604, 4a 10d, i ' liabilities Extension of time was allowed to clear : the obstruction of loga in the river, also to i clear the willows, owing to the men being i engaged in harvesting. > After arranging for a special meeting on ■ Feb. 13, the Board adjourned.
