Our Fish Supply.
TO THIS EDITOR. Sib,— For the past twenty years fish has> never been as scarce as it is at present. Notwithstanding this the public are as indifferent as if the market were fully supplied. To my mind this is a serious matter i for when people are careless of that which most concerns their interest, it shows a lack oE the principle that rears a nation into a state of independence. Our legislators have called attention to the decaying state of our fisheries, and the public has not supported them. What wonder, then, at our present condition. Government sends an inspector daily to examine the fish, if any arrives at the market, but hfs duty is like that of the man who closed the door when the horse had fled. The cause of the present scarcity and its cure I will note in a future. im.> l am, &0., HA.MPDEN.

Nsw Zealand -Rifle Association.— A. meeting of persona interested in the New Zealand Rifle Association's forthcoming meeting in Chriatchnrch was held at the Clarendon Hotel last evening. th& Secretary reported that the contractor for the trenches was very forward with his work and that there would be keen competition for the small targetcontracts, tenders for which would close to-morrow afternoon. Subscriptions were coming in slowly and the interest of the public required to be a little warmer, for the meeting being held in Christohurch was a public good, bringing trade to business people and generally enlivening the town. The Mayor of Christchurch wrote apologising for his absence, which was caused by his attendance being required at another meeting, and expressing hiß entire and lively sympathy with the movement, which he considered to be a public one and deserving of the hearty co-operation of all the citizens. ,i,,'l^» c Z°W Sives 'honour to whom honour if? due.
