Rifle Shooting.
♦ LfTTELTON EIFLE CLUB. The third competition for this Club's championships was gob off on the range on Saturday. The day was fine, but a strong north-oaet wind was blowing, and the effect of this in the gullies in close proximity to the range made good shooting quite impossible. The result was that one or two "break-downs" were recorded. The following were the chief scores :— First claes: Mr C. W. Wagstaff, 3OOyds 24, 500yds 33, 600yds 24, total 81; Mr R. Treleaven 23, 22, 30—75; Mr G. A. Lewin 28,29,17—74. Second class: Mr T. Bell 23,- 81, 20—75; Mr B. Sowden (5) 27, 16, 27— 75 j Mr J. A. Suiter 19, 28, 17—64. Mr Wagstaff got a handsome., pipe, presented by Mr W. Wales, and Mr Treleaven a set of jugs, given by Mr J. H. Collins j while in the second class, Mr Bell won Mr 6. Lewia'B prize, and Mr Sowden a quarter of a ton of coal, presented by Mr N. C. Schumacher. KAIAPOI EIFLES v. H.M.S. CUEACOA. On Saturday a match took place between ten men chosen from the crew of H.M.S. Curac,oa, now in Lyttelton, and ten of the Kaiapoi volunteers, on the range of the latter, and resulted in a victory for the local team by 27 points, the scores being : — Kaiapoi volunteers 745, Cura<;oa 718. The conditions of the match were seven shots each at 200, 300 and 500yds, and the following were the individual scores :— Kaiapoi Eifles. — Lieutenant Simpson, 200yds 31, 300yds 24, 500yds 26—81 ; Private G. Templeton 28, 22, 20—70 ; Private H. Condon 27, 30, 28—85 ; Private N. G. Eobilliard 29, 29, 22—80; Colour-Ser-geant Blackwell 29, 14, 15—58; Private C. Simpson 30, 26, 23—79; Private P. Bate 26, 25, 16— 67; Sergeant Pearce 21, 22, 25—68; Private Fantham 29,28,25—82; Private Higgins 28, 16, 31—75 ; total— 74s. Curac.oa'B Team.— P. O. Wright, 200yds 32, 300yds 27, 500yds 19—78 ; G. Instructor Courtman 28, 20, 20—68; M.A. Gunnard 28, 20, 18—66 ; P.O. Priaton 30, 18, 23— 71; A.B. Poole 28, 14, 26—68; A.B. Barnes 28, 25, 15—68; P.O. Caaley 28, 18, 28—74; L.C. Holland 29, 18, 22—69; C.T.O. Prior 28,24, 23—75; L.S.Phillips 27, 27, 27—81 ; total 718. The visitors were after war da entertained in the orderly-room, and a very pleasant time waß spent.
