CANTERBURY TYPOGRAPHICAL ASSOCIATION.

The sixth annual meeting of the Canterbury Typographical Association was held on Saturday evening, at the Foresters' Hall, Oxford Terrace, Mr D. Edmonds (president) in the chair. The report of the' outgoing .Board of Management and the balance-sheet for the past year, which showed the association to be in a prosperous condition, were unanimously adopted. The former contained an important proposal relative to dealing with unemployed printers throughout the Colony by means of the Labour Department. The election of officers for the ensuing term resulted as follows :— President, Mr W. Cullen ; vice-president, Mr P, Sprosen ; treasurer, Mr A. T. W. Brad well (re-electedM secretary, Mr F. C. Gerard (re-elected) • Board members, Messrs R. Bette, R. D. Dagger and W M'Namara; auditors, Meaßrs J. Wheatley and R. P. D. Maurice. Messrs D. Edmonds and F. C. Gerard were appointed delegates to attend a conference of representatives of trades and labour unions, to be held on Saturday, Feb. 4. Some important business having been, disposed of, a vote of thanks to the retiring officers terminated the proceedings. BOOTMAKERS' UNION. The ordinary meeting of the Christchurch Operative Bootmaker's Society was held on Wednesday evening at Inglis's buildings, the President (Mr S. ytooke) in the chair.; There was a good attendance of members.'" After the correspondence had been dealt with, the following resolution was carried unanimously : — " Tbat this Union of workers strongly protest against the action of the Australasian Premiers (more especially the democratic Premier of New Zealand) in inviting the Duke and Duchess of York to these colonies without first consulting the people ; and, further, we protest against one penny of public money being expended in entertaining such visitors, seeing the vaßt numbers out of employment, and the hardships that exist in the ranks of the working classes throughout the colonies, believing that the duty of a democratic colony is to first attend to the wants of its own people." Several small matters were referred to the Committee, and the meeting terminated.
