LAKE ELLESMERE LANDS.

■ '' '♦ A Rush of Applications. Again was the demand for land in Canterbury shown when this morning 114 persons made 485 applications for 39 lots of land on the Lake EUesmere Reserve at Greenpark and Rabbit Island opened for selection under Leases in Perpetuity. The area of the sections average 15 acres, the land being first-class. Of the 39 lots 29 were disposed of, the applications for the re- i mainder having been suited with others. For five sections in Block 24 there were 355 applications, the areas being larger than those of the others, viz., i 50 acres each; The demand thus appears j to be for sections larger than 10 or 15 acres. All these lots are well situated, being close to the railway line and within six miles by road from the Tai Tapu dairy factory. The land carries grass of good quality, and is admirably suited for heavy j grazing, although not for cropping. Parts ' are liable to be submerged in wet weather. The rental charged on these lots is calculated at the rate of four per cent per annum on the estimated capital value. The rental upon the Greenpark sections varies from 2s per acre to 4s 9d per acre per annum, and on* the Rabbit Island sections from 3s 2d to 5b 7d per acre. The ten seotions which were unallotted may be re-applied for at the Land Office. They fire all bound to be speedily disposed of. ___

London Missionary Society. — The friends of this institution will be glad to learn that two missionaries of repute are about to visib Chrisfcchurcb, and conduct services on Sunday next in Trinity and Linwood Congregational churches. The Eev Thomas Lord has been for twenty l years in the service of the Society in j Madagascar, having there been entrusted specially with the work of education. The Eev J. King's sphere of work has in the past been in Samoa, though now he is the Missionary Secretary for the southern ' Colonies.
