At a meeting of the Women's Christian Temperance Union a letter was read from, the South Australian Union, conveying heartiest congratulations at the women of New Zealand obtaining the franchise. / FIEE. The farm buildings of W. Walters, Papakura, were burned down this morning with their contents. They were insured in the Norwich Union Office for JB3OO. A CONSTABLE CHARGED WITH DEUNKENNESS. A policeman named Thomas O'Brien was charged at the Police Court with drunkenness. H9 did not appear, and counsel applied for a remand, which Sergeant Gamble opposed. The Benoh granted a remand, and aooused was allowed bail in hia own recognisances. LIBEL ACTION. MASTEETON, Oct. 12. The libel action Pownall v. Payton was heard in the District Court to-day, before District Judge Kettle. Mr Pownall, Mayor of Masterton, cued the .proprietor of the Wairarapt* Daily Times for commenting on a paragraph in a presentation address to an ex-employee Bigned by him, the Times Btating that the Baid paragraph was blasphemous. In summing up at con* siderable length, the Judge spoke of the irreverence of young men in the Colony. The jury, after thirty-flve minutes' retirement, gave a verdict for the plaintiff with. Is damageti. - No costs were allowed. THE HAUEOTO'S PASSENGEES. WELLINGTON, Oct. 12. The Hauroto, which arrived from Sydney to-day, brought 144 passengers for all ports. Lord Kelbirne, Lord Glasgow's eldest eon, who is attached to one of the vessels of the Australian squadron, is a passenger. She brings 9 Chinese, 4000 oases of fruit and 300 tons of sugar. TECHNICAL CLASSES ASSOCIATION. DUNEDIN, Oct. 12. The Colonial Treasurer attended at the rooma of the Technical Classes Association to-night, when certificates were presented to successful students. The number of students enrolled is three hundred and thirteen. DUNEDIN CALEDONIAN SOCIETY. The Directors of the Caledonian Society, in their annual report, Btate that the membership is 329. The bank overdraft was reduced by £161, and there is now only a debit balance of £52. The Bum o£ £10 waß voted to the Technical Classes Association. In spite of increasing competition the annual gathering holds its own, last year's gate money being £20 in excess of that of the previous yew. '
