KAIAFOI BOROUGH COUNCIL.

+ The fortnightly meeting of the Kaiapoi Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening ; present— His Worship the Mayor and Councillors Weston, Mathews, Butt, Brighting, Whitehead, Bugg and Evanß, Correspondence was received :— From the Wairarapa County Counoil on taxation proposals, &c. From the Secretary of the Fire Brigade, asking the Council's patronage to an entertainment shortly to be given. The request was agreed to. From Mr C. Hansen requesting that his name be taken off the roll, and that Mr J. Hayman and Mr Horsf all be put on for two cottages in Meadow road ; and from Messrs Moon and Thurlow, asking to have their names put on the Burgess 801 l for their respective shops. The requests were complied witb. — The Surveyor's report was read aud adopted. It stated that Mr Sims was using a crossing contrary to the by-law, and it was agreed to write to Mr Sims, informing him that if he wanted the crossing he must make the necessary application to the Council.— The finance report showed the receipts to be J&4 l7s 9d,'and the debit balance at the Bank £551 2s 4d, and recommended accounts amounting to £36 15s 2d for payment. The report Was adopted. The specifications for the Hugh street channelling were read and approved, and tenders were ordered to be called for the same by next Council night. One Councillor here asked if the Clerk knew where the large roller was at the present time. The Clerk said he was not aware, whereupon Councillor Butt moved, Councillor Bugg seconded, and it was carried, " That in future "the charge be 2s 6d and Is 6d per day for the large and small rollers respectively, also that the Clerk make an inventory of all the Council's rolling Btock." Attention being called to certain damage of the Council's property, it was deoided on the motion of Councillor Brighting, seconded by Councillor Butt to Bend a letter to the head master of the Borough School— with a request to read the same to the scholars— to the effect that any person found damaging any property of the Council would be prosecuted. Councillor Brighting drew attention to certain defects in the Peraki street sump, and suggested a pipe being placed in it. It was decided to await the Fire Inspector's report before taking action. During the discussion several Councillors supported the construction of sumps similar to those in Christchurch and Eangiora under the footpaths. Councillor Butt moved and Councillor Matjhews seconded that the Fire Inspector be asked to furnish the Council with a scheme by which the North Boad sump could be used in cases of fire in Peraki street.
