The Kaikanui Hotel Destroyed.
At about twenty minutes past five yeßterday afternoon the Kaiapoi firebell rang an alarm, and the engines, both steam and manual, were at once taken to the scene, which proved to be the wellknown building, the Kaikanui Hotel, in Peraki street. The fire raged furiously, and the flames were communicated to several adjacent houses, but were luckily extinguished. The danger, however, was so serious that the occupiers had already removed their furniture. The origin of the fire is not known at present. The building was owned by Mra Monk, and was insured in the Liverpool, London and Globe Office for £500,- and the furniture and stock, including vehicles, for £650 in the same office. The assembly room, which was insured' for £50, was also destroyed. The stables were insured for £100, but escaped injury. Mr Graham, the licensee, considers that his loss will amount to £300 or £400, although he secured his buggy, harness, &c. Mr Horneblow, living next to the hotel, is insured, but the exact amount has not been ascertained.
