After the Telegraph Office closed the diecußßion en Mr Earnshaw's motion to strike out the vote of as a bonus to aid the flax industry wan continued, almost every t-peaker supporting the retention of the vote. The motion was lost on the voices. Mr Shera moved to strike out the vote of .£BSO tor payment of honorarium to twelve members of the Legislative Council from the date of their appointment. The motion was lost by 25 to 16, a proposal by Mr T. M'Kenzie to reduce the vote by £1 also being lost by a similar majority. Mr Tanner moved that the item .£3OOO grant to the widow and daughter of the late Hon John Ballance ba stiuck out. He said he had opposed a similar vote on last year's Estimates, and this vote was just the same violation of the principle. . Mr Earnshaw a^ked the Premier to etate whether the circumstances were the same in this instance aa in last year's case. The Premier replied that the circumstances were the same. Mr Eabnshaw said he was satisfied with that assurance. On division the vote waa retained by 32 to 5 (Messrs Tanner, -Taylor, T. Thomson, Lawryand Houston). Mr Finkerton moved that the vote grant to the Wellington Hospital Trustees {£ for £. subsidy) be struck out. He pointed out when a grant of £1500 was asked for the Dnnedin Hospital last year Ministers said it was not part of the duty of Government to provide money for hospitals. , Mr Wright said that the Christchurch Hospital was also in sore straits, and had not received any assistance. The Hon W. P. Beeves denied that, and stated that the Christchurch institution had received <81 4s subdidy for every J6l raised. Mr Earnshaw thought that Government had acted very shabbily indeed towards the Dnnedin Hospital. After considerable \ discussion the item was retained by 30 to 8. On the item .£ISOO grant for Female Eefage work, the Hon W. P. Beeves Baid, in reply to Mr Earnshaw, that enquiries would be made into applications received for assistance under this head, and on the result of these enquiries the money would be divided as fairly as possible. Mr Eabnshaw asked whether the Mount Magdala Asylum, Christchurch, which had received a grant of .£SOO last year, would participate in this vote. The Hon W. P. Beeves : Yes, certainly. The vote was passed. On the item ha^f-year'a salary for Female Inspector of Faotoriea, The Hon W. P. Reeves said, in reply to a question, that she would visit all the factories in the Colony where women were employed. The appointment was not yet made. A motion to strike out the item £403, payment of expenses incurred by Inspector Drummond, was lost by 18 to 17, and the vote was eventually reduced by £100. j Me W. Hutchison moved to omit the item £2000 subsidy towards the purchase of the old show grounds, Sydenham, £ for £ to be paid by the Sydenham Borough Counoil. The motion was lost by 30 to 4, and the i vote agreed to. On the item £20C0 for a State farm, the Hon J. M'Kenzie said, in reply to Mr Earnshaw, that the site of the first farm (on which this vote, would be expended) would be either at Waverley or Horov whenua. It was quite possible that: Government would select a piece of land for a State farm on the Cheviot estate, and a site for a farm would be chosen near the Taieri Lake when the Otago Central Bailway reached that locality.
