An influential deputation haa asted Xjlovernment to subsidise the Vancouver line steamers and make Melbourne the port of call. The Premier, in reply, adriHed the deputation to make a definite proposition, and promised that runtil then Government would not come to c decision in the matter. He added that the Colony was not in a position financially to make experiments ia promoting trade. BRISBANE, Oct. 5. Settlement on the Land. The Minister for Lands expects to have everything ready by the end of next week for people to go on the land in cooperative communities. Reduction of Postage— A Loss. Postmaster-: Geneial report 3 that the redaction of postage rates between Queensland And Great Britain, has resulted in a loss Amounting to nearly .£SOOO per annum. HOBART, Oct. 5. Retrenchment. The House of Assembly has reduced the salaries of the President of the Council And tbe Speaker of the House from £400
to J8250. A proposal to reduce the payment of members from JBSO to 5s was rejected by 14 to 12. A proposal to reduce the salary of the Agent-General was also negatived. __
