Religious Instruction in State Schools.

Whim heartily admiring the conciliatory apirit in which the Bi_hop 6f Chxißtchuroh is striving to reconcile, to a certain extent* the divergencies of opinion among the churches which have caused the exclusion ofi religious instruction from the State schools, we think that hiß profeodal that the children should he instructed during school hours in portions of the. Scriptures is fraught with danger to our educational system. It would be opposed by many parents, and would cause disagree, ments and disputes which would lead to the disruption of the system. The evils which would ensue from that would more than counterbalance the good whioh would result from the children receiving instruction in Christian dogma half an hour each day. It might, however, ba possible to have in our State schools a text-book of moral teaching somewhat after the style of that suggested by Pasto* Birch ; and it must be remembered that? the moral tone of the schools in question is higher than some of their opponents will admit. sssssssssissssm-
