The Museum. — Many interesting additions to the collection in this institution have quite recently been made by the Curator, Captain Hutton. In the ethnological room have been placed on the top of the Malay case life-si zed busts representing five types of men — the Caucasian, Mongolian, Negro, North American, Indian and Malay. In the art gallery, the additions are a cast of a baß-relief representing the Egyptian goddess leiß, and two casts of bas-reliefs of the Winged Assyrian. These latter are from originals now in the British Museum, and discovered by Layard in Nineveh. The antiquity room has been enriched by two reduced models of some of L&yard's Ninevite spoils, representing the Winged Bull and theWingedtion. The originals of these, eleven feet high, are in the British Museum. In this room have also been placed peculiarly interesting reduced models of the animal mounds or ancient burying-grounds of Wisconsin, of the palaeolithic age, made in the form of gigantic men, birds and animals, includingthe mastodon. These mounds were Burveyed at different periods during the past sixty years mostly by surveyors attached to the Geological Survey Department of the United States. These specimens have been obtained from Ward's National Science establishment, Rochester, New York, in exchange for inoa bones. In the art gallery has been hung a very pretty ■water-colour painting by P. Harper, of Svran river, Western. Australia, presented by Mr W. S. Savago, late of Christchurch.
