Canterbury Women's Institute.

♦ A special general meeting was held yesterday afternoon for the pufpose of considering, and, if necessary, taking action in connection with the proceedings of the Health (and Drees) Department of the Institute. Mrs Garsia presided, and between forty and fifty ladie3 v/ere present. Tha business of the moet'ng having been introduced by Mr 3 W.. Wilson (the Hon Secretary), Mrs Cunnington proposed — " That this meeting, I while recognising the desirability of moderate and rational drees reform for I women, is not in sympathy with the j oxtreni9 views and practices of a section of I iho Hygiene Department, and hereby records its objection to the name of the Institute baing u^ed in connection therewith." The motion was seconded by Miss Gordon, and after Mrs Burn, Mis 3 Walker and Miss Taylor had expressed their views, wai put to the meeting and carried, only four dissenting. Mies Colborne-Veel then proposed — "That the General Committee of the Institute meet once a month, and thafc the Superintendent or Secretary of each department shall bring up a report of it? last month's proceedings, and apian of work proposed for the succeeding month, to be confirmed by the General Committee." The motion was seconded by Mrs Burn, and carried unanimously. The next motion was proposed by Mrs Newton, and seconded by Mrs Delamare, and was as follows : — " This meeting, while recognising and deeply deploring tha need for reforms in the direction of social purity, id of opinion that such important and difficult work should not be undertaken by any section of a department, and only under the supervision of an organiser spesially fitted for the work, chosen by and possessing the entire confidence of the Institute as a whole." The motion waß carried without any discubsion. A resolution concerning the revision of rules, so as to place the departments more under the control of the General Committee, was agreed to unanimously.
