A Licensing Case.
♦ — (Tib Pbkbb Association.! WELLINGTON, August 2. The Pakipaki licensing case was before the Chief Justice to-day. The Havelock Committee had refused a license, and then granted it upon an Order-in-Council being issued validating a technical omission. Sir James Prendergast said that the Order-in-Council could not stand good, as Government had no power under the Licensing Act to issue it. The Committee had, therefore acted without legislative authority, and he ordered a writof certiorari to issue quashing tbe certificate. Sir Kobert Stoat appeared for the Maoris, irho were the plaintiffs.
