Canterbury Liberal Association.-— The usual fortnightly meeting of the Committee of the Biccarton branoh was held last week. The names of several new members were handed in ; two more gentlemen were added to the Committee. In answer to the resolution forwarded to ihe Premier, urging the Government to take into consideration the question of establishing a State Bank, the Premier replied, thanking the Association for the suggestion, but stating that the financial proposals of the Government were contained in the Financial Statement. It was resolved to invite Mr G. W. Bussell to address a meeting at Addington, under the auspices of the Association, on the political questions of the day, at as ently a date as posßible. Methodist Council. — The annual meeting of the Canterbury Methodist Council was held in the Durham street schoolroom, ! on Friday evening. AU the Methodist bodies in the district were represented, viz., the Wesleyans, Primitive Methodists, United Methodist Free Church and the Bible Christians. The meeting commenced with a social tea. The annual report and balance-sheet were adopted, and tho following officers elected for the ensuing year : —President, Bey S. Macfarlane; VicePresidents, Revs W. Morley, J. Dawson and Mr E. Reed; Secretary, Mr J. A. Flesher (re-elected); Treasurer, Mr G. Bowron (re-elected). Arrangements wero made for holding a convention in the Durham street Wesieyan Church from August 21 to 25. A hearty vote of thanks *,vas accorded the retiring officers for their services during the past year. The following resolution was carried unanimously — "That this Council records its deep co_-vk-'-jon that tbe power of the direct veto for tluMSEue of licenses for tho sale of intoxicating liquors should bo conferred upon the pecplo without delay."
