SELWYN COUNTY COUNCIL.

j '«»■ • A meeting of the Selwyn County Council was held this morning; present— Mr D. M'Millan (Chairman), Messrs J. G. Murray, W. Boag, W. Dunlop, J. Eennie, T. H. Anson and H. W. Peryman. ; CHAIRMAN'S STATEMENT. The Chairman stated that since last ' meeting letters had been received from \ the Department of Agriculture regarding the observance of Arbor Day; from Mr O'Malley, giving a return of tr.f&o on the Bealey ferry for the past quarter; from the Linwood Borough Council, in respect to dog registration; from tbe Bailway Commissioners, in reference to letting out Lake EUesmere ; from the Bailway Commissioners, relating to the planting of the reserve at Springfield; from Mr Casßidy, applying for a right of way through a plantation, and from Mr Davies, having reference to water-races. ;' MISCELLANEOUS. Mr Anson moved — " That copies of the Council's resolution with regard to the Noxious Weeds Bill be sent to the members of Parliament for the district." ; The motion was agreed to. The Chairman moved — "That Messrs Dunlop, York, Peryman and Jameson be appointed to see what trees are wanted for planting at New Brighton on Arbor Day." The motion was carried. j The report of Mr O'Malley was adopted* It was decided, on the motion of Mr Bennie, seconded by Mr Murray — "That as soon as a satisfactory answer is received from the Government, the Council proceed i with the work of opening Lake EUesmere ' as far as the Ahuriri Lagoon, and that the ! urgency of the work be placed before the ; Government and the members for the : County." '- The report of the Inspector of Slaughterhouses was read and received. | THE UNEMPLOYED. j A deputation of the unemployed waited , on the Council. ) Mr Powell asked that some of the men might be taken on to the Council's [ works. j Mr Fleming said the City Council had found some work for the men, and he trusted that the Selwyn Council would follow in its wake and assist them to tide over the winter. i The Chairman said tbe Council would give every consideration to what had been saidi but he pointed out that its expenditure filtered through the various Boad Boards. The Council itself did not keep i a large staff, the only work it did being plantation work which was not of a nature ,to be suitable for the unemployed. The ; Council would consider the statements made by the deputation, and let them know the result. } Mr Fleming suggested that the Council ! should use its influence with the various Boad Boards. The Chairman said the Boards were fully alive to the state of the labour market, and had all the funds possible at their disposal. The deputation then thanked the Council, and withdrew. A lengthy discussion ensued, and ultimately Mr Peryman moved — "That the variouß Boad Boards be intimated that they will be subsidised £ for £ up to £20 on works undertaken for the purpose of giving immediate employment to some of I the unemployed from Christchurch." This was seconded by Mr Bennie, and carried nem con. Accounts were passed to the amount of £952 12s 4d. Matters of detail having been dispoeed of the Council adjourned. SPECIAL MEETING. A special meeting wbb held, at which the same members were present. The audited accounts for the year were presented and passed, no exception being taken to any of the items.
