Kaiapoi Borough Council.

The ÜBual meeting of the Kaiapoi Borough Council was held on Tuesday evenings present— The Mayor, and Councillors Bugg, Hopkins, Mathews, Weston, Evaiiß, Bute, Anderson and Lissaman. A letter was read from the Town Clerk, Rangiora, asking for information as to bicycle riding on footpaths. It was agreed to forward a copy of the by-laws. The Surveyor's report was received and adopted. The Finance Committee reported the receipts for the past fortnight to be £207 Is 6d, the debit balance at the Bank .£523 2s, and cash in hand £40, making a total debit of £483 2s. Accounts amounting to £29 2s lid were passed for payment. His Worship stated that a summons had been taken out against a person who had attempted to stop the Council in its work in the Dudley creek. This action was approved, Councillor Butt dissenting. The tender of Mr J. Winterbourne for the cemetery sbed, for £11 17s, was accepted. It was decided to advertise for tenders far a new culvert at Dudley's drain. Councillor Lissaman spoke in very feeling terms of the services rendered to the Borough by the late Mr G, H. Wearing, and moved that a letter of condolence be sent to Mrs Wearing. Councillor Mathews seconded, and the motion, which was supported by His Worship and several other Councillors, was carried unanimously. Councillor Bugg advocated obtaining poisoned wheat to eradicate the sparrows, which were becoming a perfect pest. Ib waß resolved, on the motion o£ Councillor Lissaman — " That £5 be spent in buying birds' heads at 4d per dozen." It^ was agreed to obtain twenty-five yards of screened shingle for repairs at different parts of the Borough, also to get two trucks of broken metal for repairs to main streets. Councillor Weston moved—" That a free license be granted to the Women's Christian Temperance Union for their hall." Councillor Hopkins seconded the motion. Councillor Lissamaa moved bb an amendment— "That a fee of 10s be charged." The amendment was seconded by Councillor Butt and carried. One of the reporters present then went round the room and collected the amount from the members, and the license fee was paid.
