Timaru Harbour Board.
♦ [Per Press Association.! TIMAEU, June 21. The Harbour Board to-day resolved to take steps to have a local Bill passed, authorising it to reclaim in the bay north of the harbour, as a means of providing for the disposal of shingle accumulating on the south side. A report from Professor Bickerton on an analysis showed that the concrete blocks exposed to alternate wetting and drying on the edge of the breakwater are decomposing and breaking up through the extraction of the lime and the deposit of magnesia by the sea water. Lime has decreased from 38 to 24 per cent, and the magnesia increased from *668 to 10-6 per cent. The blocks have only been exposed for three or four years, but^ they were defective from porosity. This destructive action ib not observable in the main work where the blocks are constantly wet. The future value of the shingle accumulation is indicated by two applications for leases of sites for stores, which have been postponed pending the settlement of the dispute with the Eailway Commissioners concerning access.
