SHEARERS AND LABOURERS' UNION.
A meeting was held last evening for the purpoae of establishing a branch of the Amalgamated Shearers and Labourers* Union in Christchurch. Mr Martin occupied the chair. Mr J. O'Brien, Executive Secretary, explained that Mr Martin had been instructed that Mr Kelly and Mr Tanner had intended to address a meeting, but they had been prevented from bd doing by previous engagements. Mr Tanner, however, had stated that if a branch were established he would give it all the assistance in his power.. Mr O^Brien then spoke on several matters* in connection with the Society he represented. He afco explained the benefit scheme which Mr Kelly was drafting. Mr Garb'erton spoke -. upon the position of the Union in Australia. Mr Bobinson pointed out the valu,'e of healthy organiaation amongst all classes of workers, and especially amongst shearers. The meeting unanimously decided to establish a branch of the Union, and the following officers were appointed : — Mr W. W. Tanner, Chairman; Messrs Martin and Robinson, Vice-chairmen, and Mr S. Moore, Secretary and Treasurer. A Committee consisting of Messrs Warburton, Garberton, Dunphy, Hammond, Sims, Fancett and Wilson was elected, with power to add to their number. The meeting concluded with votes of thanks to the speakers and to the Chairman. The newlyelected Committee then held a meeting, and adjourned till June 20. \
