Two brothers named Benham have been committed for trial on a charge o£ defrauding the London and General Bank, now in liquidation, of £49,000. Storage of Grain for WarLord Winchilsea, in the House oi Lords, moved that in view of the possible outbreak of war Government should store six months' supply of breadstuffs in State granaries with a view to encourage home production. Lord Playfair objected that this would involve a corn tax of one shilling per quarter, amounting to a million sterling annually, and moreover that there waß plenty oi graiii in dock and in store* to last the country seven months, Lord Oranbrook suggested the withdrawal of the motion, to which Lord Winchilsea eventually agreed. The German Elections, The Berlin correspondent of th( Times says that the proportion oi voters against the Army Bill is aboul five to four. The majorities of the Government candidates were slender and were chiefly obtained in the smal towns. The Irish Question. The Pall Mall Gazette announces that the Government intends tc recast the financial clause of the
Home Kule Bill by giving the Irish Parliament power to frame a budget up to five millions sterling, subject to ratification by the Imperial Parliament. Roman Catholic Missionaries. The Vatican has asked England to permit Roman Catholic missionaries to resume work in Uganda. The Armenian Troubles. It is believed that two of the Professors of Marsovan College are innocent, and that the Turkish witnesses who accused the Armenians of plotting against the Sultan were deliberate perjurers. CALCUTTA, June 20. The Foreign Minister in Siam has expressed his willingness to make reparation to Prance for the murder of the French escort. PARIS, June 20. Riot at a Bull Fight. A dispute occurred at the bull fight in the Amphitheatre at Nismes. The populace became excited and a riot ensued, during which many persons were injured. Proposed Income Tax. MELBOURNE, Jone 21. It is probable that Mr G. Downes Carter, Colonial Treasurer, in making the Budget, will propose the imposition of an Income tax. New Coinage. The first sovereign and half-sovereign of the new gold coinage, both of handsome design, were struck in tho Miut by the Governor. SYDNEY, Junk 21. The Australian Floods. The recent floods have so silted up the Maoleay river that it is ezpeoted to take twelve months to make the river navigable, except for vessels of light draught. PERTH, Junb 21. A Rich Goldfield. Specimens of gold, weighing upwards of three thousand ounces, have been brought from Ccolgardio. It is believed that the field will be one of the richest in Australia. BRISBANE, June 21. Proposed Export Bonuses. Government is considering the propriety of offering bonuses to encourage the expor of beef, mutton, butter and cheese.
