A RAILWAY ACCIDENT.
• , [Peb Pbesß Association.]) DUNEDIN, Jttne 19. The special train that brought the English mail, on its return with empty trucks for Oamaru was derailed at Pelichet . Bay, running into a siding, where Bfccod ; Borne fifteen trucks loaded with coal. The _ morning was intensely dark, with rain falling, and the first intimation the enginedriver received that the line was nofc clear waa the force of the concussion. The two ■ | foremost trucks were smashed to pieces, I and others driven co far back that the two j hindmost passed over the buffer. The j engine also sustained severe damage, the cow-catcher and front wheels being wrecked, 1 while the engine itself was lifted off the • line. The affair seems to have been i the result of pure accident. When the [ special passed the spot the engine cleared , the line aa ib went over the points, which afterwards fell back into their original position. It has been the custom for inaiiy years to keep the points open in the manner • in which they were at the time of the • occurrence.
