t Band of Hope. — The usual monthly 0 meeting of tho Christchurch Baptißt a Tabernacle Band of Hope was held on 3 Monday evening, Mr Bastion in the chair. - There was a good attendance of members f and friends. The following contributed c items : — Misees Taylor, M ? Neish (2)i b Creswell, Simmons, Webleyj"*Ward and r Myhill, and Messrs Robinson, Ritchie - Ball and Keir. c Ttjam Street Theatre.— An entertain!j ment was given at the Tuam street theatre 1 last evening by Captain Fred Thomas, who s claims to be the only sifflew ventriloque in " the world, assisted by Mr Harry Barton, ' a ventriloquist of more than usual merit. • The programme commenced by Captain " Thomas, who, in addition to his powers as | a whistler, is one of the best raconteurs ' that haveever visited Christchurch, telling > 6ome very good anecdotes in a racy fashion, " which at once established him as a favour- ■ ite with the audience. He afterwards gave " some dramatis scene?, ire. * :<iing one from ! the Lights of London, in which he took four * separate parts in a manner that proved him ' to be a capable actor. His whistling ventriloquism was an extremely clever performance, and was loudly applauded. He : gave several tuaes — one bar being whistled > in the ordinary way, and the following one : being heard in various parts of the hall. ■ He repeated the performance with hia - mouth bandaged, and a cigar held in his i mouth seemed in no way to interfere with . his wonderful r owers. Mr Harry Barton, ! in addition to his ventriloquial entertainment, Bang some excellent comic songs. The entertainment concluded with some amusing competitions between local amateurs, which were productive of great amusement.
