BREACHES OF THE BEER DUTY ACT.
Fines of £5 Inflicted. At the Ohristchurch R.M. Court, this morning, before H. W. Bishop, Esq., R.M., and Mr R. Westenra, J.P., Henry Stark Drummond, licensee o£ the Railway Refreshment roomß at the Christchurch Railway station, pleaded "Guilty" to a charge of knowingly withdrawing beer from a cask, No. 1076, without destroying or defacing the beer-duty stamp thereon, on May 26. Mr Stringer prosecuted on behalf of the Collector of Cußtoms. Mr Deacon appeared for defendant. , A fine of £5 and coatß £1 8s was inflicted. On the application of Mr Stringer, a second charge was withdrawn. William Coul), barman at the White , Hart Hotel, for withdrawing beer from a i cask numbered 977 without destroying or defacing the stamp was fined £5 and costß, Ba. , Augustus Po3t, of the Wharf Hotel, [ Woolston, for a similar offence, was fined : £5 and costs, £1 Ba. \ Lily Mohr, daughter of the licensee of the Provincial Hotel, pleaded " Not guilty" 3 to a charge of withdrawing beer from a [ cask without defacing the stamp. i Mr Stringer prosecuted, and Mr Kippenberger appeared for defendant. b After hearing tho evidence of defendant i and another witness, tne Bencli said there j was a doubt aa to whether defendant had . withdrawn beer from the ca?k,and tho case 1 1 would be dismissed.
