Afc a meeting of the Special Committee o£ the House of Lords, appointed to inquire into the meat trade, Lord Onslow presiding, Professor Long (expert) gave evidence that Falkland Islands mutton was often sold as Australian. The Board of Trade of British Colombia recommends that Australian mutton and wool be replaced on the free list. The money market is glutted and three months' bills are nominally at 2 per cent. It is probable that the Bank rate of interest will be lowered on Thursday. A large number of frozen sheep by the Otarama were spotted. The frozen meat by the ship Timaru, from Melbourne (left Jan. 20), arrived in good condition, but there are complaints that all Melbourne mutton is irregular in quality and illegibly marked. Wethers are mixed with ewes j the meat is roughly, dressed and ungraded, and packed in inferior cloths. The Waikato'a shipment of cheese arrived in good condition. Tallow has declined sixpence.
