9 [Special to Press Association.] LONDON, Apbii. 10. Two gunboats have arrived at Hull to protect the docks and other property in case of an attack. Numbers of clergy in Hull waited on the shipowners in connection with j the strike. The owners replied that ! the men's places were still open, provided they agreed to work with nonUnionists. The military are guarding the railway and docks. One thou- j Band additional non-Unionists have been sent from London to Hull. The Daily GJironide correspondent wires that the town has the appearance of being besieged. NEW YORK, April 1(X The Trades Unions in Chicago have ordered a strike of 7000 men for higher wages.
A public meeting for the purpose of establishing a branch of the Amalgamated Shearers and Labourers' Union at Temuka waß held in the Social Hall on Saturday evening, there being a very fair attendance. Mr R. Hammond, of Geraldine, occupied the chair, and Mr J. O'Brien, of Waimate, addressed the meeting, giving a detailed history of the Shearers' and Labourers' Union from its commencement to the present time, and was heartily applauded. Mr Boreham also spoke concerning the advantages of Unionism, and on a motion proposed by Mr Davis it was decided to establish a branch. After the enrolment : of members an election of officers took place, resulting as follows :— Chairman, Mr K. Franks j treasurer, Mr J. M'lnness ; j secretary, Mr William Da?ey ; committee, , Messrs B. Langridge, J. Morriß, A. Franks, | G. Brown, and H. Drew ; conference delegate, Mr William Frew. After resolving to meet on April 15 to consider conference matters, the meeting ended.
