The Commissioner of- Grown Lands wrote Bfcating that no funds were available for clearing gorse o3' unsold Government sections in the xiverbed>. but he would make an effort to offer them, for gale as - soon as possible, so as to obtain occupiers who would be responsible for the clearing. The matter was left in the Mayor's hands to endeavour to get- the sections vested in the Borough.. The Cemetery Board wrote, asking, that the road dividing the old cemetery ground be closed, but the Council has no power to close any of the roads within, the Borough.. Leave was granted to. Mr George Goleman to have asphalt laid in East and Tancred streets, in front of Mr Collier's shop. Mr M. B. Denshire complained o£ having been overcharged in regard to the channelling of William street. It was- decided to adhere to the original agreement. The Gas Company wrote, offering revised terms for lighting the town, and the matter was referred to theLighting Committee to report at next meeting.. The library report was read and> adopted. The names of Messrs W. Kidd> and J. Dorm were added to the list of members of the Fire Brigade. The ' report on the Brigade was as fol-. : lows :— The annual inspection of the Brigade iwaß held on Thursday la&when there was a large attendance. The men presented a very smart appearance, theiruniforms and accoutrements being kept in excellent order. The whole of ths-Brigado-plant was also inspected, and eeems to b© in very good condition, and when the manual engine has been overhauled and repaired the whole plant will bs in thorough working order. Your Committee would call special attention to the accommodation at the engine-shed for the Brigade plant, and would strongly urge the necessity of making some improvement. Additional room is urgently needed for the practical working of the plant, and yonr Committee would very strongly impress upon the Council the necessity of increasing it. The report was adopted. The Engineer's report was read and adopted. The usual notice was ordered to be given to levy a rate for the incoming year. A petroleum license was granted to Messrs Miles and Co. Accounts to the amount of .£75 lls 5d were passed for payment. The Council then sat as a Domain Board, but the business was only formal.
