' A deplorable state of affairs is reported from the Woogooroo Lunatic Asylum as the outcome of the floods. The inmates had to be crowded in the upper ports of the: building, and patients of all degrees of; insanity were packed together like sardines.

A meeting of representatives from the various Friendly Societies in Sydenham was , held .in the Sydenham Borough Council Chambers last night for the purpoße of considering what steps should be taken to raiße. funds towards the relief of the sufferers by tha Queensland floods. There were present the Mayor (Mr "William Jacques) in the ohair, and Mobsts Fabian and Monday (Loyal Volunteer Lodge of Oddfellows), Derry and Miller (Court Thistle of the Forest), Archibald and Hulbert (Oak of Sydenham), and Charles Allison, Town Clerk, who aoted as Secretary.- The Mayor Baid the meeting had been called to test the feeling of the representatives of the Friendly Societies in the borough an to whether they would make a separate effort to raise funds for the purpose of relieving 1 the aufterera by the disastrous floods in Queensland. It had been suggested to him that a church parade of the various Societies might be held either in the old show grounds or in the Oddfellows' Hall. He thought Sunday March 12, would b« a suitable date for holding a church, parade or demonstration. After some discussion it was decided to hold a demonstration, probably on the date suggested by the Mayor, who undertook to communicate with the Lodges not represented at the meeting. It waa suggested that some of the looal bands should be engaged, and that short addreasea should be given by gentlemen possessing some knowledge of Queensland. After some further discussion the meeting adjourned till Monday next at 8 p.m. The Mayor of Sydenham desireß to acknowledge the following subscriptions in aid of the Queensland relief fund : — Thf Mayor, .£1 Is ; H. N. Bates, £2 2s ; John Thompson, £1; W. Ward, 10s; collections Sydenham Baptist Church, £3 15b ; Sympathy, 10s; Mra S. Ayrey, 10a ; James Maddren, 7a 6d ; collections St Saviour's Church, £11 12s 3d; T.0.G.,10a; collections Sydenham schoolchildren, JJlOj W. J. Rudd, £1 Is j H. French, 4a ; total, jeß3 17a 9d. The list ia lying at the Borough Council Office. • On Monday 'evening a publid.meeting lirasheld in the Oddfellows' Hall, Woodend, to consider the best means of assisting the sufferers by the floods. A strong Committee was elected to act in conjunction with the Oddfallows' Committee, and Mr F. Chambers was appointed Secretary and Treasurer, to whom any subscriptions in money or goods may be sent. A large quantity of produce and a fair amount in cash were promised in the room. Can- , vaasera for each district wore appointed. On Sunday Bpeoial services were held in .the Anglican Church of St Mary, the Primitive Methodist Church and the Roman Catholic Chuxch of St Mary-at-the-Buoh, Geraldine, and collections made in aid of the Queensland relief fund, when the offertories amounted to JJI2, £2 15s and JBIS respectively. A collection at the Anglican Church at Peel Forest realised £2 18s. A special service and collection will be made at the Presbyterian Church on Efunday next. The Committee appointed at a recent meeting to collect subscriptions and goods has met with considerable success.

' With the donation from the Chrißtchuroh Working Men's Club and subscriptions from members, the President of the Club has purchased four tons of flour. The flour will be ehipped to Brisbane in tho Wakatipu on Saturday. The Amberley Lodge of Oddfellows on Friday decided to convene a meeting of representatives of Friendly Societies in the district to consider what steps should be .taken to assist the Belief Fund, and three members were appointed to represent tho Lodge at the meeting. The final Tahuna fire fgte for this treason was held last evening in aid of the Queensland Belief Fund, and waa attended by between five and Biz hundred people. The New Brighton Tramway Company generously gave the whole of ita takings to the fund, and the sum realised should be substantial. The Sydenham brass band enlivened the proceedings with excellent mußic, and Professor Bickerton gave a very instructive lecture on "Fireworks and flow to Make Them/| interspersing his remarks with some interesting experiments, whloh were, unfortunately, interfered with by the high wind. After the lecture, the Professor gave a brilliant dißplay of fireworks, amongst which were some features never before produced in Chmtohurch, the new epioyoloidal wheels being muoh admired. The Queen's Cadeta were' present, and gave an exhibition of banner marching.
