Seltcyn County GotmdiL.— An ordinary meeting of the Selwyn County Council was held to-day. The business; which was unimportant, is reported elsewhere. The Eotunda Concbbt. — The following are details of laßt night's collection made at the bands' concert :— 3 haJf-orowns, 3 florins, 51 shillings, 114 sixpences, 158 three-penny pieces, 110 pennies, and 35 half-pennies, making a total of £S 11s ll*d. Supreme Cootrt.— His Honor Mr Justice Dennisfcon held sittings in Chambers, bankruptcy and divorce to-day. The businebs is reported elsewhere. His Honor will leave by the express to-morrow for Dunedin, in order to take the Criminal sittings on account of the illness of Mr Justice Williams. The Cheviot Estate. — The right of pasturage of the Cheviot Estate for eleven months, from May 1 next, was put up to auction this morning m the Provincial Council Chamber.. Aboub sixty persons ' were present, and Mr J. T. Matson acted as auctioneer.. The upset price was .£867 per month. No bid was received, and Mr Matson announced that the estate would be offered to the public, subdivided, at an early date. Views op Tea* Plantations. — Mr E. Townsend, agent for Messrs Gilmore, Younghusband and Co-'s teas, is exhibiting in his shop window in High street, and within the shop, a number of nicely-executed photographs of the various plantations where their Indian, Ceylon and Assam teaß are grown. Specimens of the leaves of the plant in their various classes are also exhibited. The views show very distinctly the various processes through, which the tea passes before it reaches the consumer. An Oppobtunity. — What may be rightly termed the largest sale of furniture held in Christ church for years will commence tomorrow at Mrs Isabella Bowman's furniture warehouse, Victoria street. Some idea of the magnitude of the sale can be formed from the faot that there are over three thousand lots to be sold. It is expected that the sale will occupy nine days. Messrs Bowman and Son, auctioneers, are entrusted with the sale, and assure those requiring furniture that a lon&fide clearance without reserve will be made. Particulars appear in another column of this issue, Tbiai. op Twitch Gbtjbbebs. — A trial of twitch grubbing machines was held to-day on the farm of Mr Charles Lewis, at Hals- | well, when three implements, viz,, those of | Mr George Duncan, of Opawa, James Drummond, of Kirwee, and P. and D. Duncan, of Christchurch, were exhibited at work. Luncheon on a -liberal scale was provided by. the proprietor of the farm, Mr P. Burke being employed by ; him to cater for the visitors. Thin was done by means of a covered conveyance, containing the provisions, sent up in charge of two waiters, and the guests enjoyed an al fresco meal in the shade of the loncf avenue of trees leading to the house. The trial was conducted without judging, tnoae pie- ] sent; forming their own conclusions as to the merits of the several machines. 8 Ltttblton Bowing Club. — At a Committee meeting of the Lyttelton Bowing Club, held on Monday evening, the Secretary was instructed to forward the following resolution to the Canterbury Bowing Club : — u The Committee of the Lyttelton Bowing Club considers that the members of the Canterbury Bowing Club, and their

i representatives in the Championship Foura I at the late Christohuroh Eegatta, have endeavoured to discount the merit of the win of the Lyttelton crew in the Championship Fours. This Committee, therefore, offers four gold medals; to-the value of twenty pounds (£2O) for competition between the same contestants of the respective Clubs, viz., Canterbury and lyttelton ; the race to be rowed on: a straight course of two miles in Lyttelton Harbour on a date to be hereafter mutually fixed." The foregping has been forwarded to the Secretary of the Canterbury Bowing Club. Swimming. — A meeting of the Committee of the Lyttelton Swimming' Club was held on Monday evening. A letter wbb read from Mr G. J. C. Smart, Consul in Canterbury for the Swimming Association, stating that competitors for the various championships would be coming from Qisborne and Auckland; and suggesting that the Lyttelton fixture should be held, at a date as near those ab Christchurch and ABhburton as possible. The Christcliurch and Eaßt Christchurch Club also wrote suggesting March 11 as a suitable date on which to hold the Lyttelton gathering. It was decided^ to fall in with the sug- : geation, and to inform the various Clubs as soon as possible. In addition to the 440yds Championship of New Zealand, a programme of eight events was drawn up. It was decided to ask Mr A. Francis to undertake the duty of handicapping and starting. i
