There was a considerable delay at the . start on account of some of the crews show- \ ing a disinclination to take the positions , allotted them by the starter. Finally, when the crews were got in line, the pistol \ failed to go off, but, aa the cap snapped, . Ly ttelton shot away, followed, after a brief hesitation, by the others. Lyttelton l carried the field along at a clinking pace, , and by the time three-quarters of a mile had been finished had secured a lead of \ something like five lengths. All this r time Union, Wellington and Canter--5 bury bad been rowing a cntting-down k race, which Union stood best and Canter- . bury worst, for at a mile the latter had , dropped back beaten, while the former , shook off Wellington and began to reduce ; Lyfctelton's lead. The last mil« was a t determined effort on the part of Welling- . ton to reach the leaders. They rowed a . sterling race, and the more they drove \ Union along, the more the latter drew [ upon Lyttelton. It was most interesting r to watch, and Wellington's burst in the last quarter of a mile, with the responding ■ Bpnrts from Union and Lyttelton, made a , grand finish to a splendid "all-out" ccn--1 test. Lyttelton reached the post two and [ a quarter lengths in front of Union, Wellington a length and three-quarters i away, and Canterbury six lengths behind , i Wellington. Star were outpaced from the , start. The placed crews were heartily , cheered at the finish. WINNEES.
