-• MelißOttenh Mail. — Tha Manapouri and the Warrimoo arrived at the Bluff early tbiß morning. Their mails should reach Christchurch by to-morrow's express from Dunedin. A Mcsical Country. — New Zealand appears to be well served in the matter of brass bands. There are in the Colony, no less than eighty-two bands, properly organised and equipped, each .having a membership of over forty, and some numbering up to one hundred and ten members. Dbinking Unwholesome Water. — During the last few dayß six men from the large four-masted ship Hinemoa, now lying at Lyttelton,. have been brought in to the hospital. This has given rise to rumours of typhus fever, &c, but enquiry at the hospital shows that the men are ! suffering from influenza with some typhoidal symptoms. The cases are by no means serious, and the trouble no doubt originated in Wellington from the men drinking, bad-water*.
Women's Institute. — The photographic claßß met as usual in the V.M.C.A. rooms on Saturday, from 3to 6 p.m. Mr Page explained the manufacture of gelatine plates, and then Bhowed the specific action of developers. By means of a tabulated chart he showed the quantities required for development in any given case. The class then adjourned for practical photography in the vicinity, and were very successful in taking and developing negatives of some * public buildings. j Criminal Sessions.— The quarterly ; sessions ot the Supreme Court were opened this morning before his Honor Mr Justice Denniston. Frederick Cooper was sentenced to three years' penal servitude on a charge of forgery. Thomas Downs was acquitted on a charge of burglary, on which Henry Jensen was convicted and remanded for the report of the probation officer. Charles Allen pleaded " Guilty," and wa3 sentenced to two years' imprisonment for an indecent assault. j 1 Meeting op Creditors.— A meeting of j j the creditors of Mr H. B. Davis was held I this morning in the Official Assignee's office. Mr F. K. Hunt appeared for the debtor. The liabilities were — unsecured £65 Os 7d, secured £296 7s 6d. The securities were valued at £360, leaving a balance of £63 12s 6d. THe assets were ' nil. The Mutual Benefit Society held a mortgage over property in Linwood for j , £261 7s 6d. There wa3 a further agree- j ; merit to mortgage to Mr R. W. England, | registered in Dec, 1892. It was left to the Official Assignee to inquire as to the validity of this and to realise. Mr Wood proposed and Mr Simpson seconded " That the bankrupt obtain his discharge as early as possible." This was carried. The following is a list of the liabilities: — Unsecured— T. 11. Papps £4 ss, Crown Brewery £2, Dr F. E. Hunt £2 16s, Linwood Town Board rates £2 5s Id, J. Phillips £3 16s 4d, D. W. Simpson £3 10s, Grey Valley Coal Co., £4 11s, W. K.Moor £11 7s 2d, Seaborn £4, Wood £4, Mrs Hall £1, James Reynolds 7s, Ivy of Linwood Money Club £21 3s, total £65 Os 7d. Secured — Mutual Benefit Society £261 7s 6d, R. W. England £35, total £298 7s 6d.
