CHRISTCHURCH REGATTA CLUB.

Amateur Championships of

Hew Zealand.

This regatta was continued last evening, on the Waimakariri. A course was prepared some distance below Kaiapoi, and at about half-past six a start was made with the Champion Fours. The event was a fiasco. At about a hundred yards from the start Wellington fouled Union, and immediately after the latter got clear Canterbury came into their water, and a collision occurred. By this time Lyttelton had secured a good lead, and held it until the coz, mistaking his coarse, steered them in | such a manner that they lost lengths, and were pasßed by Canterbury and Wellington. The latter spurted and poshed their opponents, who had gone close into the shore, and Wellington fonled them slightly. In the end Canterbury reached the post two and a half lengths in advance of Wellington, who led Lyttelton by five lengths, Union three lengths away. Star were outpaced from the start. Union lodged a protest on the grounds that they were fonled by Wellington and Canterbury, and Wellington also protested against the race being awarded to Canterbury, alleging that tbe latter bored them into shallows and refused to give way when requested. The Committee considered the protests in the evening, and decided to have the race rowed over again at four o'clock this afternoon. The other event rowed was the LADIES' PLATE (Pour-oar outriggers, -with coxswain;. — First prize, £20 and Cup presented by the President j second, £4. Canterbury led from the start, and won by three lengths. Wellington and Star had a splendid race for second place, the latter getting the beat of it by a couple of lengths. The Championship Pair-oared Eace, postponed, was rowed at Kaiapoi this morning, at seven o'clock. The conditions as to weather were all, that could be desired, there being but a light breeze blowing. The race resulted as follows :— ' PAIB-OAB CHAMPIONSHIP OF NEW ZEALAND.—First prize, £12 ; second, £3. One mile and a-half . Union Bowing Clvb — W. F. Samuels, bow ; B. F. Crosbie, stroke 1 Wellington Bowing Clvb — W. Simm, bow; C. Hooke, stroke 2 Canterbury Bowing Club— N. L. Macbeth, bow ; J. M. Laurie, stroke .... 3 Lyttelton Bowing Club— A. E. M. Aschman, bow ; W. B. HarMss, stroke 0 Star Boating Club— F. Pownall, bow ; J. E. stroke ... ... ... • ... ... 0 Lyttelton and Wellington went away with the lead, and after rowing one hundred yards both crews were a length clear of Union, who were a little in advance of Canterbury and Star. At this stage the Wellington crew steered over to Lyttelton and fouled them, the bow and oar of the Lyttelton boat catching the Wellington boat abreast of the bow seat, and knocking a hole in the boat just at the water-line. While the two boats were looked together Union and Canterbury got clean away. Coming into the home stretch Union had a strong lead, with Canterbury nest, bnt the latter and Star steered across into midstream, the last-named in particular going well on to the north bank. Wellington, rowing very pluckily, then took second place, and a desperate race between them and Canterbury ensued to the finish, the former getting the verdict by half a length. Meanwhile Union were romping home several lengths ahead, with Lyttelten labouring two or three lengths behind Canterbury, the riggers of their boat having worked loose, and Star a long way astern. The Union couple were heartily cheered for their victory, while every credit is due to the Wellington crew for the plucky way they rowed after they collided with Lyttelton. WTNNEBS.
