The Queensland Floods.

Pbom one end of New Zealand to the other — from" Auckland to Invercargill— one reads of efforts to aid the sufferers by the fearful devastation wrought in Queensland by the recent floods. Chriatohurch has seemed to halt in the noble work, fine Mayor having unfortunately hesitated to convene a meeting of the citizens until last night. But the halting had no more than seeming, for whilst the Blayorhesitated, various" sections of the community took counsel, and to-day there is abundant proof that the people of the city -and its suburbs are full of sympathy for their unfortunate fellow-colonista, and that they are prepared to give practical expression thereto. The meeting, late, as it was, proved to be eminently practical. A strong Committee will make eympathetio canvass for subscriptions, a " Queensland Sunday" will-i-it is hoped— be arranged for, and the suggestion of a "Queensland Saturday " ought to- be put into concret* form without delay. The Orangemen of this community are cabling £50 to-day, other local bodies are moving, and even the very poor for whom Mr Her rick acts aa administrator, have expressed their deaire to give in work what they cannot give in money. Next Thursday evening an entertainment in the Theatre Royal will appeal to all sections of the community. Auckland's fund already reaches .£lOOO, and to-morrow's offertories} in all the Catholic Churches in that diocese will be given to the fand. The Dunedin Committee to-day i 3 sending produce to the value of £250. Queensland's diatresß is very great, and the heart of the people of New Zealand is deeply moved.
