The Stkbh-Smith Company.— -Mr Harold Ashton, one of the advance managers for the Steen-Smith American , Mystifierß Combination, which has been playing in Bunedin very . successfully, arrived in Christchurch yesterday, and is making arrangements. for the appearance of the Company in the Theatre Royal on Monday, Feb. 27. Scientific Lectube.— The Lyceum was well filled with an appreciative audience last ni&ht, when Mr W. W. Collins gave the second of his series of scientific lectureH. The 3iibjeot was "The Earth before Life." The lecture was profusely illustrated with diagrams thrown on to the flcreen by the oxy-ether limelight, which } was manipulated by Mr A. H. P« Noble. I The next lectute will be given on Thursday next. 5
Tjhe Tblkgbaph Lines. — Another interruption in telegraphic communication occurred yesterday afternoon through a large pole, situated between Eakaia and Chertsey, succumbing to the gale. The break was a bad one, and the wires were so much damaged that the necessary repairs could not be effected. No messages were sent south of Eakaia last night; Eifiiß Shooting.— The first competition j by members of the A Company, for a Martini-Henry rifle, presented by Lieutenant Drayton, and other prizes, will take place at Bromley to-morrow. There will be three clasßes.--The following team will represent the Christchuroh MartiniHenry Rifle Club in their match with the Lyttelton Martini Rifle Club on thelatter's range on Saturday : — Mesars J. B. Wakelin, O. W. Turpin, A. W. Jonea, F. S. Parker, W. Taylor, W. A. Banke, A. Gundereen, and G. A. ( Tozer. Emergency— J. C. Adams. Polo.— The North Canterbury Polo Club had a practice game at Bangiora yesterday, bnt the Btrong north-wester interfered very much with the play. Messrs E. Wilder (captain), J. Bay, J. H. Kenyon, W. Blackett and Captain Wells (white) played Messrs A. Temple (captain), L. H. Lane, J. M'Donald and J. DampierCrossley (colours), and after a most exciting game the latter team won by a goal. For the Colours L. H. Lane Bcored two goals and J. D. Crossley one, and for the Whites Messrs Wilder and Bay each Bcored a goal. The Holiday. — Yesterday's holiday afforded a favourable opportunity for ! numerous picnics and pleasure parties. The balk of the holiday-seekers availed themselves of the excursion to Little Biver in connection with the Championship Regatta. About one thousand stayed to witness the rowing events, but more' than double that number went on to Little Biver and picnicked in the neighbourhood. The tramways were well patronised during the day and evening, the Sumner and New Brighton lines being kept busy all day running their living freights to and from the seaside resorts. There was alsp a special excursion to Sumner in the even- | ing : it was accompanied by the Garrison Band, which played capital selections on the Cave Bock. The trains to Lyttelton were well patronised, a great many persons travelling there in the morning and afternoon. Unfortunately the day did not pass without mishap, as a very serious accident occurred at Lake Forsyth. The weather was warm and windy all day.
