AUSTRALIAN ITEMS.

VICTORIAN FISHERIES. I The cheapness of fish which has lately '< been noticeable in town is to a large extent due to deep sea operations which have been carried on along the Ninety Mile Beach. An enterprising fisherman having discovered what he believed to be a profitable fishing ground, chartered a steamer, paying £140" per month for her, and with a large seine and bag net, has brought in at least once and sometimes twice a week immense hauls of excellent fisb. One day he landed in Melbourne over one thousand baskets of fish, which he sold for about £140, clearing £120 after paying proportional cost of the vessel's hire and market dues. He finds that it does not pay him so well to send on the fi3h to town by rail from Port Albert or any of the southern Gippsland stations as to bring them himself up the bay. The chief inspector of fisheries, who has noted this development with interest, states that good hauls of bream are being made in the Gippslaud lakes.
