SELWYN COUNTY COUNCIL.

THIS DAY. A meeting of the Solwjn County Comic fir wa9 held this morning: 5 present— Mr D* M-Millan (Chairman), Mesarß H. W. Peryman, E. Weßtenra, W. Boag, T. H. : Anson, J. Rennie, W. Dunlop, J. Of. Murray and T. York. chairman's statement. The Chairman eaid that at the present; meeting the Council would have to levy a eeparate rate in the llalswell riding according to notice already published, and to appoint an assessor t j act for the Council in the claim for compensation brought by Mr C. Campbell. A special meetiDg had been called for noon to make by-lawa under the Water Bupply Act. Reports hud been received from Messrs Wilson and Davies on the water-racee, with a letter from the South Waimakariri River Board, asking /or a gaugo to be put in at Mr Feagram's land. A letter had been received from the R&kaia Road Board, referring to the suggested repairs to the High Peaks road. Mr O'Malley had reported that there had been a fire at the Bealey Hotel last week, but that the damage done was slight. I HALBWELL. I A motion -rcaa paßaed, making a separate rate of one farthing in the JB on all rateable property in the Halawell Biding for the period ending March 31, and payable in one sum on March 10. Messrs Quealy Bnd Comer were appointed collectors of the rate. I A letter was received from the Tai Tapu Road Board, complaining that the Board bad been charged with too large a proportion of the costs in the case of Gilmour v. the County Council, and stating that had the coete been equally distributed over the County, there would have been sufficient funds to tho Board's credit to leave a balance after debiting the coat of clearing the Hals well. It was decided to reply that the Council could not reconsider its decision, which it deemed the fairest to all parties concerned: 1 COMPENSATION CABE. Mr H. J. Hall was appointed to acfcftß' Assessor for the Council in the compensation case of Campbell v. the Council. WATKB-RACBB. A special meeting was held at noon to consider the new water-race by-laws,which were read through, and ordered to be further considered at a spcoial meeting on the next ordinary meeting day. The ordinary meeting was then resumed, and the reports of the Overseers of the water-races were dealt with. These were of a generally satisfactory nature, but did not contain any matters of special importance. HIGH PEAKS ROAD. The Rakaia Road Board, in replying to the Council's letter in reference to Mr 1 Edmund Ford'c complaint of the bad state of the road between Whiteoliffe and High Peaks, stated that as the portion of the road referred to had not been formed by, the Board, and was not required for any district traffic, the Board was not prepared' I to expend any money upon it.
