Blackburne, who appeared for a renewal of the license for His Lordship's Larder, was cautioned against harbouring bad characters. Ib was stated that this practice had been discontinued, and the license was renewed. J. M'ftamara, of the City Hotel, and J. G. Harris, of the White Hart Hotel, applied for renewals of their licenses. The Chairman pointed out that, in each case, a conviction had been entered up for Sunday trading. The Committee was determined to make a strong effort to put a Btop to such trading. Tho application in each case was adjourned until June 16, to enable th9 Committee to consider the best ; means of attaining its object. I The following transfers were granted :— Scotch Stores, R. J. Whittle to T. Quill; Empire Hotel, Thomas Quill to John Carl. | THE PROVINCIAL HOTEL. Philip Mohr applied for a renewal of the license of the Provincial Hotel. Mr Cohen appeared for residents in the neighbourhood of the hotel to object to a j renewal of the license, on the ground that : the house was not required. He had only been consulted on the previous day by the objectora, and had pointed out to them that it was then too late to lodge any memorial for that meeting against a renewal of the license. He asked that the matter be adjourned for fourteen days ' to enable the memorial to be drawn up and lodged, or that the Committee should take ! notice of its own motion to the proposed . objection of his clients. j The Chairman said that the residents ' had it in their power since the convictions against the late licensee to lodge their ' memorial within the terms of the statute, ; and having failed to do so, the Committee j could not comply with the request. [ A special police report was handed in, in which, amongst other things, Inspector Pender pointed out that none of the residents had spoken to him against the re- ' newal of the license. The Committee said j that there was therefore nothing to warrant its refusal of the license, which was granted. In connection with this license, Mr R. Steele stated that Messrs Ward and Co., Limited, the proprietors of the house, had no knowledge until recently of the way in which it had been conducted, bub that immediately upon finding out the state of affairs they communicated with the police, and took steps to eject the late tenant. The Chairman remarked that the Committee considered that owners and persons interested in hotel properties, should j exercise a more strict supervision over the action of their tenants, in order to prevent a repetition of such offences.
