BOARD OF EDUCATION.

North Canterbury. THIS DAT. An ordinary meeting of the North ! Canterbury Board of Education was held this morning ; present — Mr T. S. Weston . (Chairman), Messrs K. Meredith, E. G. I Wright, J. Joyce, T. H. Ansou, H. W. ; Peryman, A. Saunders, and W. Mont- '• gomery. ■ ! BAKAIA. ! Mr E. G. Wright presented a petition • from certain settlers in the Rakaia district, ' anking for a school. The petition stated j that there were over thirty children of I school age in tbe district, and the nearest i school, Barrhill, was 6ix miles from the ; centre o£ their district. I The matter was referred to the Secretary to report. j BUILDINGS COMMITTEE. i The Buildings Committee reported that ' the following works had been allowed:— Sash at caretaker's cottage, Christchurch ; west ; municipal stove at Balcairn ; ro- ' moval of force pump from school to master's j house, Ashburton ; ventilators at Dromore ; I painting and repairs to guttering at Stoke ; j papering master's house and new gate- , posts at Halswell ; painting school j buildings at Richmond ; pump at I Hinds ; painting school buildings and | repairs to master's house at Lakeside; | repairs at Eiccarfcon ; substitution of | college bars for Btove at Saltwater Creek. I An application from Weedon for a new ! grate was ordered to stand over for the ! present. The Clerk oH Works had been ' directed'to report as to repairs to buildings ! at Broomfield, German Bay and Heathcote i Valley 3 a request for a classroom at SouthI brook ; the school chimney at Kirwee. The j Committee had resolved to consult Mr j Wright in reference to the site for the new j school at Wakanui. It had been decided to inform the Killinchy School Committee and the proprietor of the land adjoining their ground, that the Board considered j there would be no need for a new fence if j both parties would keep the present gorae ! hedge in order. A request from the Richmond School Committee for the Board to buy a piece of land as a swimj ming bath site had been refused. j The applications of the Riccarton and Fernside School Committees for renewal of their boundary fences had been considered. I It had been resolved in each case that upon j completion of the fencing by the Commitj tee the Board would, on the certificate of the clerk of works, allow a proportion of the expenditure. The Amberley School Committee were allowed to place the proceeds of the sale of the tank to the credit of a fund for the purchase of an addition to the school site, which needed enlargement. The > site for the Hurunui Gorge school having been duly reserved, it had been resolved to call for tenders for the building. The following tenders had been accepted :— Alford Foreßt Bide school, W. Stevenson, .£217 11s 3d; Gebbie's Valley, painting and repairs, Moix and Jonghin, £16. It had been resolved tc call for fresh tenders for repairs at Pigeon Bay. The report was adopted.

J APPOINTMENTS COMMITTEE. j The Appointments Committee report , that the following appointments had been made :— -Ashburton, Mr D. Grant, second master; Little Kakaia, Mr G. Pilkington, ; master ; Ash ton, Uibb Alice Lusk, mis- ! tress; Waltham, Mr Thomaß Hughes, ! maater, and Mies H. Starkiss, infant misj tresß; Kussell's Flat, Mr- J. Dawe, maater. ! The Winchmore School Committee reported i that the master paid .£ls a yoar as house rent. If; was resolved to allow that; amount. j The letter from the Sydenhaui Committee, recommending the appointment of a teacher Jof singing, was considered. It was resolved — "That the Committee sympathised with the object, but did not see their way to recommending the additional expenditure that would be incurred in giving effect to it ; also, that much encouragement would be given to the practice of singing if the Inspectors were, requested to pay attention to it when visiting the schools, and to mention it in their reports." The application from Mr Perkius for an increase of the value of his daughter's scholarship to £40 was considered. It was resolved by a majority of the Committee, Mr Saunders and Mr Weston dissenting, to recommend that it be granted. It was resolved to agree to the appointment of a mistress at View Hill. On the application of the North Loburn School Committee, it was agreed to allow the master another month's leave o? absence. The Hampstead Committee asked that the Inspector's examination might be put off for three months, as the school had been closed for several weeka on account of the prevalence of scarlet fever. It was resolved that the arrangements made for the examination of all the schools throughout the district could not be departed from ; but that all necessary allowance would be made in exceptional cases. An inspection report on Brookside school was received from Mr "Wood. The application of two residents for an aided school near Conway township was considered. It was resolved — "That upon receipt of a formal application from Mr Holmes setting forth his qualifications as a teacher, and upon satisfactory evidence that he is d»ly qualified, the Board will appoint him as master, and will make a , grant towards his salary at the rate of JES ] a year for each child in average atten- 1 dance, and will also allow .£1 per quarter | for rent of the room; the Board to have entire control over the master and the school, which must be conducted in all respects in accordance with the regulations of the Board and the provisions of the Education Act." The report was adopted, excepting the clause relating to the scholarship allowance to Mr Perkins' daughter. MISCELLANEOUS. The Board went into Committee, and on resuming it was reported that the following motion had. been agreed to : — That the Board, having considered all the correspondence which has passed between Mr Wood, the Inspector, and Mr Newlyn, records its entire confidence in the Inspector, and considers Mr Newlyn's conduct has been highly reprehensible." Mr Anson moved—" That the motion be withheld from the Press." | Mr Perytnan pointed out that what had been done in open Board was not prviate, and could not be withheld. A proposition to reconstruct the motion was carried, and the Board went into Committee for this purpose. On resuming, it was reported that the motion had been adopted in the following form: — "That the Board having considered all the communications received from Mr Newlyn and the Inspector, records its entire confidence in the statements of the Inspector." It was decided to hold an adjourned meeting of the Board at 11 a.m. on Wednesday next, to consider the report of the Committee on the amendments desirable in the School Committees Election Act. The Committee appointed to revise the Board's regulations respecting pupil teachers, presented a report. The report was ordered to be considered at the adjourned meeting next Wednesday. The Chairman stated that protests had been received against the election of the Alford Forest and Springfield School Committees, but as the number of votes affected would not have altered the resultß, the elections were declared valid. The Chairman moved, pursuant to notice — " That a Committee, consisting of the Normal School Committee, with Mr Peryman, be appointed to consider the Normal School regulations, and report to the Board." The motion was agreed to unanimously. After some routine business the Board adjourned.
