New Zealand Racehorses.
Long before we have finished with the racing of one season we begin with the engagements of another, and the nominations for the Melbourne Cup and Caulfield Cup which appeared two days ngo prove that our Victorian friends have not yet wearied of the national sport. New Zealand is not so largely represented aa usual in the great spring handicaps, but it ia only necessary to mention such names aa Carbine, Sultan, Cuirassier, Tirailleur and Merrio England to show that what we lack in quantity we make up in quality. Wo have other representatives in the lints which will not command quite so much attention as those we have just mentioned, but Whakawni, Freedom, Mikado, Union Flag, Tiraillerie, Gatling, Pygmalion, Steadfast, Tekaum.and the rest[of the New Zealandera are not to be despised, and we ; are certainly, as a sanguine friend maintains, nearer winning a Melbourne Cup than we were a year ago. Thia Colony haa been particularly unfortunate at Flemington and Caulfield, but we shall still hope that wo are approaching the end of the long lane, and that Fortune will smile on New Zealand horses and New Zealand owners next spring.
