The City Fire Brigade.

"Common Sense" and "T.T.," in Monday's Star, effectually disposed of the somewhat frivolous complaint of "Eye Witness," which had appeared on the Friday previous. The unreasonableness of expecting that the Fire Brigade horses should be driven at a regulation trot when every moment lost may mean irreparable damage to property, and even rißk of life, scarcely needed demonstration. "Eye Witness" ia a specimen of a class of persons who must find fault with everything ; to whom the poet's " Whatever is is best " is a constant temptation to make a protest. The Fire Brigade deserves so well of the residents of Christchurch and the suburbs, that one would think even the most inveterate grumbler would be unable to find food for his besetting weakness, in anything it does or leaves undone. " Eye Witness " might better employ his talent for fault-finding, in inveighing against the thoughtless or wanton action of those wretched idiots who amuse themselfea at the expense of the Brigade and the public, by giving false alarms of fire. If he could only manage to secure the conviction of one of the delinquents, he would do a signal service to the people at large. Those who are not so unhappily constituted a3 he is find much to admire in the promptitude and good humour shown by the Brigade on all occasions, despite the frequency of false alarms ; to Bay nothing of the courage and self-sacrifice of men who risk loss of limb, or even life, and devote much time to the service of a public that happily, as we trust, numbers but few so little appreciative of their good qualities as " Eye Witness " appears to be.
