South Rakaia Village Settlement.
On Saturday ovening a meetingof settlers was hold in the Road Board office, South Rakaia, to discuss the question of tho thirds accruing from the ealo of settlement sections being handed over to the County Council instead of the Road Board. There was a good attendance, and Mr Coster, who presided, stated that the meeting wos cnlled at tho request of a number of settlers. After discussion, Mr Windsor moved — "That thia meeting is perfectly satisfied that tho Koad Board should continue to receive and expend the thirds accruing- on account of the payments for village settlement lands, and requests the Minister for Lands uot to forward the tconey to the County Council." The motion was seconded by Mr Shellock and carried unanimously. In reply to a question, the Chairman gavn information with regard to the amount of " thirds " in dispute with tho Government, and stated what action it was now intended to take. The Commissioner of Crown Lands had distinctly utated tho money would not he paid if it could he helped. A hearty vote of thanka was accorded the members of tho Road Board for the trouble they had taken in endeavouring to effect an amicable settlement. A petition was signed in the room by those present who had signed a petition sent round by Mr Wright, in favour of handing over the "thirds" to the County Council, stating that they now desired to withdraw their signatures, as those were obtained under a misunderstanding-. It was resolved — " That the resolution and petition be forwarded to the Minister i'or Lands." A vote of thanks to the Chairman closed the meetine.
